JAYCEES ANNOUNCE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT
ELMHURST, Ill., March 14,
2008 -- The Elmhurst Jaycees are pleased to announce Elmhurst resident Shirley Myers
as their selection for the 57th Distinguished Service Award (DSA). Though two married couples have been
presented with the DSA in the past, Myers is the first to be honored subsequent
to her spouse receiving the award (Thomas O. Myers, Jr., 2003).
The DSA is an annual award
given to a citizen in recognition of his/her dedication to making Elmhurst a
better community. In the last decade,
DSA has been bestowed upon: Ken Bartels
(2007), Larry Fricke (2006), Betsy Hanisch (2005), William and Charlotte
Ralston (2004), Thomas O. Myers, Jr. (2003), John and Phyllis Carroll (2002),
Ralph Pechanio (2001), Judge William Bauer (2000) and Ted Dulles (1999). No award was presented in 1998.
DSA recipients are nominated
by a third party and meet the requirement of having an Elmhurst association
including, but not limited to, a family,
church, civic, school or business affiliation. Nomination letters often include supporting
letters from organizations on which he/she has made an impact.
Myers was nominated by Larry Fricke of Elmhurst College
and was endorsed by: Mary Eleanor Wall,
resident of Elmhurst since 1959 and Myers’ colleague in the Elmhurst Senior
Citizens Commission; William Von Stein, formerly with Elmhurst Memorial
Hospital; Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci on behalf of the City of Elmhurst; Carol
Yesko, Christian Service Director of Immaculate Conception; Reverend Richard J.
Mangnall, Pastor of First Congregational United Church of Christ; Darrell
Whistler, former Elmhurst Jaycees and DSA recipient (1996); and Heidi Forbrush,
President of Auxiliary of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and Secretary of the
Elmhurst Afternoon Woman’s Club.
Myers will be honored at the DSA dinner at River
Forest Country Club on Thursday, May 8, at 7:00 p.m. Invitations will be mailed the week of March 24. Those wishing to attend who do not receive an invitation may

The Elmhurst Jaycees are a young person’s (ages 21-39)
leadership training and mentoring group who are always looking for new
members. The Jaycees meet on the first
Thursday of every month at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce (113 Adell Place in
